Osteopathy is a form of complementary hands-on manual medicine that focuses on the treatment of the musculoskeletal system, including muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues to restore balance to the entire body. Osteopaths apply the philosophy of treating the whole person, and therefore addressing the cause of the problem and not just the symptom you are experiencing. This will help to prevent the condition from reoccurring.
Osteopaths aim to increase the quality and range of movement in the body, so as to effect the muscular, circulatory and nervous systems which we need to maintain optimal health.
In Australia, osteopaths are government registered practitioners who complete a minimum of five years’ university training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, general medical diagnosis and osteopathic techniques. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners and are trained to recognise conditions which require medical referral. They are also trained to perform standard medical examinations of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems.
